The Mount Carmel Baptist Church was born out of the desire to be a spiritual blessing to the community and its citizens. Her rich history began early in the year of 1950 under the leadership of Rev. P.C.Land.  The church was originally located at 963 North Washington St.  Mother Evans was the first mother the church, Deacon Moses Stone the first Chairman of the Deacons’ Board, and Deacon Travers the first Sunday School Superintendent.  The second pastor, Rev. Oscar Stancil, an educated son of a preacher, and his wife provided dynamic leadership for the church for a period of 35 year

Under the pastorate of Rev. Stancil, the membership grew from about 25 in 1952 to 175 in later years. Many ministries were established. Under skilled management, Mt. Carmel moved to 2230 Harford Road,  a former hardware store, in 1969.  In 1987, Rev. Eratus Johnson became the third pastor of Mt. Carmel  Baptist Church.  He served until 1989.  After the premature death of Reverend Johnson, the Church was  led by the Spirit of God to call her fourth pastor, Reverend  Leroy Gilliard, Jr., in September of 1989.

Since becoming pastor of Mt. Carmel, the church’s membership has increased by nearly  twelve hundred members. During Pastor Gilliard’s 4th year, the church purchased a larger edifice with space for ten classrooms, offices and a “cathedral like” sanctuary.  Over one hundred thousand dollars of renovations have been done to this facility.  Four brothers and six sisters have been licensed to proclaim the Gospel  of Jesus Christ as ministers and evangelist.  Many ministries have been started under the leadership of Pastor Gilliard, including the Shepherd’s Ministry which grew out of the Missionary Society.  The Bible Study Classes – Rev. Gilliard’s favorite – have grown proportionately with the church’s growth.
